August 21, 2021BY Admin ( 0 ) Comment

Whether you’re applying to a university or a job in English-speaking countries like Canada, the UK, or the USA, you’ll be required to take an English proficiency test. You’ve probably heard of IELTS and TOEFL. Nowadays, there’s a new addition: The Duolingo English Test.

Duolingo is a popular app for language learning. That’s why it’s no surprise that they’ve come up with an English proficiency test. What’s great about their test is that you can take it from the comfort of your home. You won’t have to go to the testing centers. All you need to do is pay the USD 49 and you’re set. You can choose when you will have the test. The exam can be done within one hour while the results arrive in two days.

To prepare for the Duolingo English test, you’ll need to practice your writing, speaking, reading, and listening skills. There are plenty of resources online that can help you practice these skills. Practicing for your test is just one part of it. Let’s take a look at what other things you need to do to prepare yourself.

Make sure you have everything you need

There are a few requirements you need to pass during or before the test. Make sure that you have everything ready to avoid any difficulties in the future. Make a checklist so you won’t forget them too. Always track what you have and what you still need to acquire.

You should also have a good spot at home where you can conduct the test. Duolingo requires a stable internet connection and a computer or laptop with a front camera. You should be alone during the whole test too.

Practice using the sample test

If you’re nervous about taking the exam, don’t worry. Duolingo offers a sample test before you take on the actual test. This can help you assess whether you’re ready or not. It will also give you a clue on what can appear on the exam. The sample test is free although it only lasts up to 8 minutes. Keep in mind that the scoring is not as accurate.

Practice your writing and speaking

There are two components to the test: the writing and the video assessment. This is a great way for them to get to know more about you and your ability. You’ll be given two topics each to answer for the writing sample and the video interview. You’ll only be given up to three minutes to speak and 5 minutes to write.

There are different writing prompts online that you can try to hone your skills. Take a video of yourself to so you know which parts you need to improve.

Study the rules

Make sure you follow the rules. Since this is an online assessment, they’re stricter to avoid cheating. You can find it on Duolingo’s FAQ page. It will also be given during the test.

Conclusion

Having an online English test is more convenient but less expensive. It’s also a better choice since they offer free practice exams.

Before you think of taking the test, make sure that the school or company you’re planning to apply to accepts the Duolingo English Test.
