When you aim to study abroad in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, or some other foreign country; you need to take care of many aspects related to admission to the university of your choice. One such important aspect is your score on International Entrance Tests. These tests help the foreign universities determine your academic knowledge and select students having better knowledge i.e. higher test scores. So your performance in International Entrance Tests matters a lot!

The right time to start preparing for International Entrance Tests

Since your test scores are one of the deciding factors of your entry to your dream university abroad, you must plan test preparations well in advance. Failing to do that will lead to an excessive study burden on you when the tests are near and might also negatively impact your test scores.

Among the International Entrance Tests, GRE is one of the largest assessment programs in the world that measures your general academic knowledge irrespective of your field of specialization. Similarly, the GMAT is another popularly used assessment program that measures your writing and reasoning skills. It is mainly used by graduate business schools as a deciding factor to your admission to a wide range of graduate management programs. Your GRE and GMAT scores, therefore, play an extremely important role in making your ‘study abroad’ dream a reality.

The foreign universities you are aiming to receive admission to will probably require your test scores along with the admission application. So writing your International Entrance Tests is the first step to your foreign university’s application process. Though people might tell you to start “as early as possible” to prepare for your International Entrance Tests, the ideal time to start preparing for your GRE and GMAT tests is in your final semester of graduation.

Why is the final semester of your graduation ideal to start preparing for your GRE and GMAT?

By the time you reach your final semester of graduation, you have enough academic knowledge to easily grab the syllabus of the International Entrance Tests. Depending on your confidence level and learning pace, it is recommended to devote 2 to 3 months to prepare for your GMAT, GRE, and other International Entrance Tests. Your test score will come after about 10 to 20 days of writing the exam. You then have ample time to fill in your admission application to your dream university and colleges abroad.

In case you are unsatisfied with your GRE or GMAT test scores, you can always retake the desired exam subject to certain rules. You are allowed to retake the GMAT after a gap of 16 days from your last attempt subject to a maximum of 5 times in a calendar year and 8 times in your lifetime. Similarly, you can retake the GRE after a gap of 21 days from your last attempt subject to a maximum of 5 times in a continuous rolling period of 12 months.

Considering all this, if you start preparing for your GRE and GMAT in your final semester of graduation, you have ample time to appear and reappear in the tests, if need be, before submitting your admission application.

Final Thoughts

Your performance in International Entrance Tests depends on how well you prepare for your exam. Start preparing for your tests in advance to have enough time for retaking. Remember that delay in starting your test preparation will ultimately lead to a delay in your admission by one semester, so start early.
