About GRE General Test

The GRE® General Test is a computer-delivered test that measures essential life skills such as verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking and analytical writing skills in three test sections - Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning.

Test Intro

The test is conducted online and lasts for about 3 hours 45 minutes. There are 6 sections, along with one unscored section, with a 10-minute break after three sections.

Test Format

The online exam enables the test takers to proceed back & forth in a section - to view, skip, review and edit answers as they progress in the test.

GRE Test Format

Part 1: Analytical Writing

  • Duration - 60 mins (30 + 30 mins)
  • Contains two separately timed analytical writing tasks:
  • Analyze an Issue task
  • Analyze an Argument task

Part 2: Verbal Reasoning

  • Duration: 60 minutes (30 + 30 mins)
  • Two separate sections
  • 20 questions per section
  • Question Types:
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Text Completion
  • Sentence Equivalence

Part 3: Quantitative Reasoning

  • Duration: 70 minutes (35 + 35 mins)
  • Two separate sections
  • 20 questions per section
  • Question Types:
  • Quantitative Comparison Questions
  • Multiple-choice Questions - Single Answer
  • Multiple-choice Questions - One or More Answers
  • Numeric Entry Questions

Key Information

  • Results are available in 10 to 15 days
  • Passport is mandatory for applicants
  • Not recommended for those aged below 16 years
  • Non-restriction of gender, race, nationality or religion
  • No Specific Academic Merit-based Criteria
  • No Pass/Fail Result
  • Scores for Verbal & Quantitative Reasoning sections are within the range of 130-170 with 1 point increments
  • Scores for Analytical Writing Section are measured on a scale of 0 to 6 with half-point increments.
